The Manickpur Police have booked a 31-years-old man for allegedly driving his wife to suicide after he learnt about her affair with another man. The accused, Gopal Sutar, 31, a businessman, who allegedly tortured the woman, is absconding.

The deceased, Sushila Sutar, 28, hanged herself to death in their residence at DG Nagar in Vasai West. It was her brother who filed a police complaint at the Manickpur station about the alleged torture and mental stress the woman had had to go through.

"The woman had an affair with a man residing in the same locality and the husband learnt about it, leading to petty fights and assault. A month back, Gopal Sutar beat his wife black and blue, said a Manickpur Police official.

"We checked the call records and found that the woman was in regular touch with a man. When we interrogated him, he revealed that they both had had an affair. The brother of the deceased has registered a complaint, and we have registered a case under section 498 (enticing or taking away or detaining with criminal intent a married woman), IPC sections 306 (abetment to suicide), 323 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt), 506 (criminal intimidation), 504 (intentional insult). We will soon arrest Sutar," said Ashwini Patil, Investigation Officer, Manickpur station.
