With the organ donation by the family of a 66-year-old woman who suffered a brain haemorrhage that caused her death, Mumbai has matched its last year's record high of 42 cadaver donations. Despite the controversy surrounding the kidney racket in the city, families continue to lend their support to saving lives of others, in the face of their personal tragedy.
"The donor was a resident of Mumbai and suffered a brain haemorrhage. When the family members were approached for organ donation, they readily agreed," said Dr Bipin Chevle, zonal director for Fortis Hiranandani Hospital, Vashi and SL Raheja Hospital in Mahim.
While Fortis Hiranandani Hospital kept one kidney, the second one went to Jaslok Hospital. The liver went to a patient at Global Hospital and two corneas were sent to the eye bank. "With this donation five lives were saved," added Dr Chevle.
The hospital received their transplant license only two months ago and it is their first cadaver donation as well.
Dr. Gustad B Daver, president of the city's Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee believes that with the government now taking a keen interest in organ donation and joining the campaign, the numbers can go up by two to three times. "Public education has paid off. There are a lot of people waiting to get organs and when we felicitate the donor families every year they too feel like they have done a very good job." He added that people are showing faith in the transparency and fair distribution of organs by the ZTCC.
