All four lines of Central Railway were affected with trains running late after severe voltage fluctuations created technical malfunctions in the overhead equipment that powers trains.

Officials said that the fluctuations were at its worst between 6 pm and 6:20 pm in the CST-Kanjurmarg section on the Central line of the Mumbai locals, due to which several trains were facing trouble. A CST-Kalyan train got stalled because of the voltage fluctuation and this halted several trains on the tracks following it, said CR officials.

Officials said it was this kind of fluctuation that caused a major signal failure at Vikhroli some days ago, an incident where trains had to be cancelled for long periods of time during the evening peak hour.

"Technicians are working on the issue and it is expected to be rectified soon," said Narendra Patil, chief spokesperson for CR.
