A Chembur-based veterinarian and an animal rescuer, who is also an expert in trapping monkeys, are currently trying to save a male monkey that suffered second-degree burns after being electrocuted on accidentally coming in contact with a high-tension overhead wire at Mulund.

The staff of Thane territorial forest found the monkey — estimated to be three to five-years-old — with severe and multiple burn injuries on Friday night and handed it over to Abdul Hakim Sheikh. Sheikh helps the forest department trap monkeys. He took the monkey to Dr Deepa Katyal for treatment on Saturday.

As per Dr Katyal, when the monkey was brought in, he was in shock and trauma and had 60 to 65 per cent burn injuries. "The first major task was to clean its wounds up. It took us nearly two hours to do the cleaning with saline water and then we applied some antiseptic scrub to avoid infection. Antibiotic creams and imported medicines were applied and the wounds were dressed," she said. Katyal even gave cold laser treatment to the animal to help the healing of its wounds and to subside its pain.

Katyal, who has treated and rehabilitated several monkeys with burn injuries, said that the monkey will require regular monitoring. It will be kept under close observation and the challenge is to manage wounds once the monkey starts healing, she said. "Once it is slightly better it will begin scratching its wounds...that will be a problem. However, currently, the monkey is recuperating well," Katyal said. The monkey is being cared for and kept by Hakim.

"The monkey is now eating well and responding to treatment. I have necessary permissions from the forest department to take care of him," Hakim said.
