A jewellery shop owner from Vasai (East) approached the Valiv police on Monday morning over an alleged theft of valuables worth Rs35 lakh from his showroom. The police, however, began their investigation without registering an offence and now suspect foul play by the jeweller himself.

Dinesh Jain, owner of Dulhan Jewellers located in Valiv village, claimed that his shop had been broken into in the wee hours of Monday and 800 grams of gold and 25kg of silver, all worth Rs35 lakh, had been stolen.

However, senior inspector Rajendra Mohite said, “We called up vault experts and, based on what they told us, we came to the conclusion that the vault in Jain’s shop is such that it can’t be broken into. Also, he’s a small-time jeweller with a small shop. It’s hard to believe that his shop had jewellery worth Rs35 lakh in the first place.”

Jain said, “I complained to the police but they did not register the offence. They are saying that I have stolen the booty. They don’t want to investigate and so aren’t registering an offence.”

Mohite added that they are still looking into the matter and haven’t registered a case yet.
