The lives of nearly 4,000 are at stake as they might have to shift from their place of residence all. These are people who will likely be rehabilitated to make room to augment the rail network and add more rail lines. These projects are part of the Rs 55,000 crore Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) 3A.

On Monday, several Members of Parliament discussed the rehabilitation of these people with Railway officials.

"The railways have proposed additional rail lines between Virar-Dahanu and Borivali-Virar. I have demanded that sufficient measures be put in place before rehabilitating people," said MP Gopal Shetty.

As a part of MUTP-3A, the Harbour line will be extended from Goregaon to Borivali at a cost of Rs 826 crore and five to six lines on the Borivali-Virar stretch at Rs 2,184 crore, among other projects have been proposed. "Over 3,500 people needs to be shifted. The Railways need to rehabilitate them under suitable policy. I have told them that simply giving ready recknor rates of land cost would not help while compensating for their land," said MP Rajendra Gavit.

Meanwhile, Railway officials said that they have explained the nitty-gritty of MUTP-3A that are lying with the Railway Board for permissions. "We sent a detailed project report in April and are awaiting its clearance. The MPs were happy that these developmental works have been proposed and have promised to help wherever needed," said a senior Railway official.

Past cases point at how such projects usually get delayed due to relief and rehabilitation work. Earlier, work on rail lines between Thane-Kurla was delayed by 15 years, while work on Thane-Diva project has been going on for over a decade now. On the Western line, the fifth line between Santacruz and Mahim was to be redone which awaits completion owing to opposition from locals, while a sixth line on Mumbai Central and Borivali remains delayed for over a decade now.
