For the first time ever, the Mumbai University will conduct PhD (PET) and MPhil entrance tests online for students this year. Not only the tests but also the results will be declared within two to three days, varsity officials have claimed, a move that has been welcomed by teachers and students.

The varsity's examination department has decided to move the entire process online. Accordingly, entrance exams will take place on December 16 at IT labs of different colleges affiliated with the Mumbai University. Interested candidates have to submit their applications between November 6 and November 23. There are 78 subjects for the online PET exam in different faculties like science and technology, humanities, commerce and management, and inter-disciplinary studies.

"The decision of conducting online exams for MPhil and PET was taken recently at a board of examination meeting. Earlier, the exams were conducted offline and results were announced within a month. But now, it's not just the exam but also results which would be put up online. It will be done within 2-3 days," said Vinod Malale, deputy registrar, MU.

Vaibhav Narawade, a senate member from teachers' constituency, said, "It's a good decision by the Mumbai University, that they have decided to start an online entrance exam for PhDs. This should have been started much earlier, but better late than never. This would also be helpful for students who had to visit multiple venues. However, the varsity needs to give more emphasis to increase guides for PhDs."

Shomit Salunkhe, an MPhil student at the university, said, "Having online entrance exams for PhDs will not just bring relief to the students but will also have transparency in conducting the exams."
