If you’re sore about missing the boat to a ‘prestigious’ college, cheer up. Taking a leaf out of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s book, the University of Mumbai is planning to connect all of its 650 colleges through virtual classrooms, to conduct lectures, meetings, trainings and viva voce tests.

Dr Rajan Welukar, the university’s vice-chancellor, said such classes will begin only in the next academic year. “We have asked the colleges to send us details of their network provider. Those who have an MTNL or a BSNL network will be linked to the university’s network in the first phase.”

The software for the e-learning process, A-View, which has been developed by  Amrita University in Kerala, can be downloaded free of cost by a college once the network is established. Each college will be entitled to 20 network connections with a speed of 512Kbps. The university has a 1Gbps connection.

“The software has been developed under the national knowledge network. But sharing knowledge and running classes are just the tip of the iceberg. After establishing the network, the sky will be our limit,” said an enthused Welukar.

A presentation for college principals is on the cards. Dr Mohan Kumar, head of the lifelong learning department at the University, will supervise the virtual education system.

Some of the university’s affiliated colleges run on a skeletal teaching staff while a few make do with visiting faculty. Virtual classrooms may help such colleges to provide quality education to lakhs of students.

A principal said, “For each meeting at Fort, most of us need to spend six hours to 12 hours in commuting. The technique will help us as well.”

IIT-Bombay is already conducting virtual classes through A-View, which has been made to several engineering colleges.
