Teachers' organizations of Mumbai University (MU) are up in arms for security staff. The teachers' organizations allege that the temporary security staff hired by University are exploited by the MU. They are being paid less than 9,000 since the past 20 years and don't get any leave or other benefits from MU. The teachers' organisation along with families of security staff had one-day hunger strike protest on Friday in MU fort campus.

The contractual security staff of Mumbai University are paid less than half the wages that are paid by the MU to security staff hired through a private agency. The Bombay University and College Teachers' Union (BUCTU) executive committee had a one-day hunger strike on Friday from 9 am to 5 pm in the Fort campus. The executive committee, BUCTU senate and Academic Council members participated in this action along with family members of contractual security staff.

Madhu Paranjpe, general secretary of Bombay University and College Teachers' Union (BUCTU), said, "This is the extension of our struggle for equal pay for equal work. The security staff that are working past 20 years are getting around Rs 9,000 pay which is less than those who are recently hired on a contract basis by a private agency and are paid around Rs 22,000."

Echoing the sentiments of Paranjpe, another teachers organization, Maharashtra Federation of University and College Teacher's Organization (MFUCTO) President, Prof Dr Tapati Mukhopadhyay, said, "This is a basic human rights violation. The MU is not giving their rights to the security staff on a temporary basis. We will intensify the protest if the basic rights of security staff are not given to them."

A wife of a security staff from MU, said, "My husband is working past 20 years and till now he is just being paid around Rs 9,000. Where education and other expenses have increased in daily life but the salaries of our security employee in MU has not."

"Because my son is earning just Rs 9000 around. It is becoming difficult to manage daily expenses for the family where 10 members are living. We don't understand why such exploitation is being done."

Security staff who are temporarily hired by MU claim they neither get paid well, but nor get uniforms or weekly off. On top of that women, don't get maternity leave facilities or have a separate dressing room in MU campus.

Despite attempts, the MU officials remained unavailable for comments.
