The women development cell of Mumbai University, which is entrusted with investigating cases of harassment and recommending punishment for the accused, faces charges of having a callous approach.

Legislative council member and senior Shiv Sena leader Neelam Gorhe raised the issue of harassment cases registered at the university in a special mention on Tuesday.

"The cell does not conduct proper investigation into the harassment complaints made by women. The cell which is established to redress such cases, drags them for five-six months. In some cases it fails to initiate inquiry for a month or so. This is quite frustrating for women who come forward to lodge complaints against their seniors and colleagues," said Gorhe.

Citing statistics, Gorhe told the upper house that between 2009 and 2013, the cell in MU registered 24 cases of harassment against professors and non-teaching staff. Out of which action was taken in 21 cases.

Gorhe demanded that government must direct the vice chancellor of the university to take immediate steps in such cases and take action on the accused.
