Over 20,000 engineering students from various colleges affiliated to Mumbai University (MU), are on the verge of losing job offers and admissions to foreign universities as MU has failed to declare the results even after two months, since the last paper was held.

Who's responsible for delay?
Sources claim that university’s online assessment system failed to fasten the process as promised. Senate member Sanjay Vairal, said, “Improper scanning and detachment of some pages of the answer sheets have messed up the process once again thus delaying the results.” Last year too, the online assessment system had delayed the results by 40 days.

What are the repercussions?
The delay has effected students' job offers as most of them have already bagged the pre-placement offers. Officially, they would only be enrolled as soon as they submit their final year results. The delay in the first year results has also effected the second-year admissions. Several diploma holders, who wish to take direct admission in the second year of the engineering courses, have been kept on hold as their admission is based on the vacancy in the second year.

What do officials say?
University as usual have not bothered to provide an explanation to students about the cause of delay. Dean faculty of Technology, SK Ukarande, was unavailable for comments. Refuting the claims of faulty online assessment, Dinesh Bhonde, university's controller of examinations, said, “The online system is the most superior and secure system. The results were delayed as there were not enough teachers to assess the handful of papers, which were sent late.” He refused to answer why some papers were sent late, but promised that all eight semester results would be declared by Wednesday night.

Studentspeak
Students term university administration as “incompetent” and “insensitive” both. “Every year, they collect exam fee from us and failed to declare the results on time. The assessment process is so shoddy that most of us go for revaluation, which takes another 3-4 months. The irony is that the university which has consistently failed on all fronts, would decide the future of lakhs of students,” said a studnet

Only a few results declared
Of the 15 branches offered by the varsity, the examination department has declared the results for civil, automobile engineering, printing and packaging technology and biomedical technology, which have less than 2,000 students.

The delay has happened despite the fact that the exam house has spend a hefty amount in bringing in technologies to expedite the result preparation process. This includes hiring a Bangalore-based outsourcing firm Mind Logicx.

Most of these exams were concluded on June 13 and even these results were delayed by 10 days as per the Maharashtra Universities Act, which mandates declaration of results within 45 days of the last paper.
