In a major fiasco, over 25 distance education students who recently appeared for Mumbai University's MSc (IT) exam, have received a shocker. They were failed despite doing well in the exams, as the centre from where they appeared for the practical exam was declared unauthorised.

All 25 students are first year MSc students at the Institute of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL) of Mumbai University, Kalina campus. They were allotted Jankibai Rama Salvi College, Kalwa, as the guidance-cum-study centre, which conducted their practical exams too. The college now stands as cancelled as it was not authorised to conduct the practical exam.

"Our mark-sheet doesn't reflect the practical marks as we have been marked absent in all 8 practicals," said one of the students.

Describing the events which snowballed into a major fiasco, the students told dna, "Our practical exam schedule was not declared till mid-May. When we realized that other students have already given the exams, we panicked and started inquiring. Then we received calls from the centre asking us to appear for the exam at Kalwa centre."

All candidates appeared in 8 practical exams in a 10 day period, without an inkling of any goof-up. None of the officials of Kalwa centre were available for comments.

The IDOL officials maintained that the students missed the exam as they didn't report to the practical exam centre (Sidharth College, CST) allotted to them. Hari Chandan, director of IDOL, admitted the failure of the candidates registered at Kalwa centre, but refused to believe that they indeed appeared for the practical exam. "They didn't appear in the exam at the allotted centre, which is why they were failed. The centre allotment was displayed on the IDOL website before the practical exam."
