Your ride in Ola and Uber is likely to get dearer. The base fare will remain the same however the per kilometer fares are likely to rise by 25-50 percent depending on the vehicle size you book. After a more than 8 hour meeting on Monday between driver unions, Ola Uber representatives and police officers the unions claimed to have ended the impasse. However the strike shall continue at least till October 30, until the state Transport department gives it's approval to the renewed price slabs.

During the meeting the drivers demanded fare hike in both base fare and additional kilometres after that. Currently there is no clarity on the base fare of the mobile aggregators. While the subsequent per kilometer fare, on an average, ranges from Rs 8, Rs 12, Rs 16 depending on whether the booked vehicle is a regular car or a sedan and the corresponding luxury level.

The base fares can drop as low as Rs 6-Rs 8 per kilometer, depending on the time of day and demand. However, these days surge is a common feature. Ola and Uber are also secretive about the matrix behind how their fare structure and surge pricing really works in action. However, the unions sounded jubilant after the long meeting.

"Our demand for subsequent fare per km of Rs 12, Rs 15 and Rs 19 has been accepted by the companies," said Prashant Sarvedekar, head of Ola Uber Unit, Maharashtra Rajya Rashtriya Kaamgar Sangh. The unions had demanded Rs 18, Rs 20 and Rs 23 respectively.

Among the other demand that the unions claimed is agreed is reinstating drivers who the companies had blacklisted following customer complaints of ride cancellation and bad behaviour. The unions claim that the companies have also agreed to look into creating a slab pricing once a vehicle crosses 200 kms on a single journey. Until now there is no such system.

All these will be taken forward with the state Transport Commissioner office on October 30, where it shall be discussed. The unions claim that until the time the government does not agree on paper, their strike shall continue.

Meanwhile Uber has come with a statement about the strike.

"Uber acknowledges the ongoing strike in Mumbai has caused significant hardship to its riders and also to its driver partners, most of whom want to drive, but have been intimidated from doing so. Uber is proactively exploring all possible options to restore services and best support our driver partners. In this respect, we have engaged with relevant stakeholders today to solve the impasse. We wish to reassure city authorities, our driver partners and riders that restoring services at the earliest remains our highest priority."
