The Mumbai University (MU) on Thursday announced the results for the fifth semester Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) examinations, which were held from October 21 to November 7.

This year, the students appeared for the Credit Based Semester and Grading System (CBSGS), conducted by the varsity for the first time. Over 65% students cleared the test.

Of the total 64,768 candidates who registered for the examination, 64,596 appeared for the test.

About  36,241 students (over 65%) passed the exam. However, the results were announced after a delay of four days.

As per university norms, the results are to be announced within 45 days of the last date of examination. The controller of examinations, Padma Deskhmukh, said the delay was because colleges did not submit the assessed papers in time.

“It was a first for the credit based semester exams. So colleges could not submit the information in time,” she said.

Senate members accused colleges for causing the delay. “Colleges like Jai Hind and HR did not send the corrected papers in time and hence the results were delayed. For several days now, the university was postponing the matter,” said senate member Sudhakar Tamboli.

However, colleges denied that the delay was caused at their end.

“We had submitted all necessary documents and moderated papers long ago and in the prescribed time,” said Ashok Wadia, principal, Jai Hind College, Churchgate. The delay was worrying students, who appeared for the exam.

“It’s been approximately two months since our exams are over. We even filled the forms and fees for the next semester’s examination. Many students were worried because they did not even know if they have passed semester five yet. Every time we asked a reason for delay, we get vague exams,” said Rhea Sumitra, TYBCom student at SIES College, Sion.
