Keeping their hunt on for those involved in setting up snares inside Film City, Goregaon East, the Thane territorial forest department officials arrested two more people on Tuesday, taking the number of arrests to eight within five days.

Thane forest department officials said they arrested two residents of Sai Bangodapada close to Aarey Colony on Tuesday. "Suresh Kindre (34) and Janu Kharpade (36) were arrested for setting up the snares. Both are employed as cleaners at Film City. The court has given us their custody for two days, so we can understand their involvement and the crimes carried out by them," said Range Forest Officer Santosh Kank. He added that their names were revealed during the interrogation of the accused caught before.

Six people arrested earlier have been sent to judicial custody in Thane jail.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, the Mumbai Security Force staff, which too has been carrying out patrolling and search for snares, found nine snares of which two were found close to the Bombay Natural History Society's Conservation Education Centre campus.

Wildlife activists claimed they had always suspected that snares were being set up by poachers inside Aarey, Film City as well as the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, but the extent of the revelations was shocking and worrying. "So many snares are openly being set and now an accused has also confirmed killing a sambar fawn inside SGNP, which means that Mumbai's wildlife including leopards is under severe threat. The authorities need to wake up and take action," said a wildlife activist.
