Mumbai: Two held by Kandivali police for making Rs 5 crore extortion call

Kandivali police have arrested two persons for allegedly demanding extortion of Rs 5 crore from a businessman. One of the accused dropped a parcel in a society at Kandivali and asked the watchman to hand it over to the victim. The parcel contained a bullet and a threat letter. Then onwards, the accused kept calling the victim for extortion using mobile phones of different hawkers, but the accused ran out of luck and were arrested on Tuesday.

The arrested persons have been identified Kalyan residents Mahesh Bhanushali, 40, and Surendra Yadav, 34. Yadav works at a grocery shop at Kalyan run by Bhanushali. 

According to additional commissioner of police, North region, Rajesh Pradhan, the incident of the parcel happened on May 27. “The parcel contained a bullet and the letter had informed the victim to wait for call. Later, the victim received a call and the caller demanded Rs 5 crore and threatened the victim with dire consequences if he failed to pay the money,” said a police officer. The victim then informed the Kandivali and got a case of extortion and criminal intimidation registered in this regard.

“The accused then kept calling the victim using mobile phones of different road side hawkers for extortion money. On Tuesday around 10 pm victim again received extortion call after which we swung into action and apprehended a suspect Surendra Yadav from Mulund,” said police inspector Ravi Adane from Kandivali police station.

Yadav during interrogation spilled the beans and informed the police that he had been making extortion calls on Bhanushali’s behalf, police said.
