Is Reay Road turning out to be among the most unsafe stations in Mumbai for train running? The station has seen untoward incidents for the past two days with the latest being the guard of a train- Rajendra Raut- being injured by a stone thrown by an unidentified person from the western fringe of the station.

According to railway officials, Raut was the guard of train 139 CST-Panvel and while the train was entering platform number 1 of the station from the south-end of the platform, a stone flung allegedly from one of the shanties constructed on the bridge of the station hit Raut on the nose.

Officials said the train was delayed for about five minutes and the guard proceeded on his journey to Panvel after being provided first aid. The incident happened at around 6pm on Thursday.

On Wednesday afternoon at around 12:30pm, a tarpaulin sheet from one of the shanties fell on the roof of a train leading to sparking and other technical problems on the overhead equipment as well as the pantograph of the train. The pantograph of the train had to be lowered and the train had to driven at slow speed. The process of lowering the pantograph took over ten minutes by which this train had delayed those following it.

"The train carried the tarpaulin sheet all the way to Wadala and there personnel had to switch off the power supply, climb onto the train and remove the tarpaulin sheet," said an official.

Some time later on Wednesday afternoon, some pieces of metal from the shanties above fell onto the tracks delaying another train.

"Reay Road is becoming a dangerous station with shanties all along. Kids play on the platforms and at night there are stray cases of stone-throwing. It is high time the railways and civic boides like the BMC and the police get together to do something about it," said a senior railway official.
