The Anandilal and Ganesh Podar Society has requested the Bombay High Court to restore the prohibition on all vehicles on the Saraswati Marg — except for school buses and emergency vehicles — where the society runs five institutes. The society said heavy traffic congestion has put the safety of children at risk ever since the prohibition was revoked.

A division bench of Justice B R Gavai and M S Karnik have issued a notice to the traffic department and called for a reply on why it has revoked the 2009 order and allowed all vehicles to pass on the road, during the time when school children are alighting or boarding the school buses. The reply has to be filed by September 11.

The Mumbai traffic department on May 9 this year revoked its order from the year 2009 that restrained entry of vehicles, except for school buses and emergency vehicles between 11.30 am to 1.30 pm on Saraswati Marg in Santacruz west.

Nearly 13,507 students and 2,000 teaching staff attend the five institutes — RN Podar school, Lilavatibai Podar, Podar International, Podar Jumbo Kids plus, Podar Junior College daily, who are picked up and dropped in school buses or by their parents/guardians.

In June, the society made a representation to the traffic police, and along with the Parents Teachers Association, wrote to the traffic branch praying them to revoke its order. As per the earlier order, other vehicles were restricted entry on the Saraswati Marg, from SV Road towards linking road. However, the petition reads, "the traffic branch without giving any hearing to the schools, arbitrarily and illegally, revoked the 2009 order". Further, no reason or justification is given for revoking the ban and there seems to be no rationale in lifting the vehicle entry ban, the petition reads.
