Mumbaikars beware. The next time you think of jumping a red signal or overspeeding anywhere in the state, don't be surprised if you get an e-challan in a jiffy.

After implementing the e-challan system in the city, the traffic administration is now aiming for state-wide implementation of 'one state one e-challan' system.

The Mumbai Traffic Police (MTP) has launched a digitised challan system against traffic violators.

The said project which aims at penalising traffic violators across Maharashtra with an e-challan will be enforced in two phases. The first phase has already been rolled out in the police commissionerates of Mumbai, Nagpur, Navi Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Pimpri, and Chinchwad. The second phase will cover the remaining parts of the state.

In a bid to make the project more digital-friendly, the traffic police have discontinued the existing MTP mobile application. They are set to launch two new applications named as MUMTRAFFICAPP (for Mumbai city) and MAHATRAFFICAPP (for rest of Maharashtra). The applications are an updated version of the previous ones, and will now enable the users to find out if e-challans are issued to erring vehicle owners. Following the e-challans the offenders can pay the fines online.

"The one state one e-challan project has made most of the vehicle drivers conscious that if they violate any traffic law, they cannot easily get away just by not spotting any constable on the road. One may think that they have violated any rules in other parts of the state so they cannot be penalised but in a bid to send across a strong message to all drivers, we are initiating new measures," said Joint Commissioner of Police, traffic, Amitesh Kumar.

The mobile applications also enable the users to report about traffic violations done by others. The police can take appropriate actions in collaboration with the Regional Transport Office. The trial version of both the applications has been launched officially. It will be out for use shortly.

A senior traffic police officer said, "Sometimes the offender is not aware how many e-challans have been issued against him or how many times he has violated the rule. Under the one state one e-challan project, we have made an attempt to address the people's issues and CCTV cameras are increasingly acting as a deterrent against breaking rules."
