Mumbaikars will now get a glimpse of some of the most rare rocks, minerals and fossils from Maharashtra. In a first of its kind exhibition on geology, centre of extra-mural studies of Mumbai university, in collaboration with Instucent trust, Pune’s Deccan college and Matrix India, has organised the exhibition called Rocks, Minerals and Fossils.

Mugdha Karnik, director of the centre and chief organiser of the exhibition, said “A subject like geology is not touched in detail in our school or college curriculum and not a lot is known on what changes earth has gone through. This exhibition, in particular, will talk about geology of Mumbai and the changes it has undergone.

“Mumbai has never witnessed an exhibition on geology before. Knowing about the rocks and fossils can change one’s perspective about the world we live in,” she added.

Dr Pravin Henriques, geologist (minerals), said, “There is a lot of beauty in the form of minerals and rocks spread across Maharashta. The exhibition will cater to secondary minerals, also called zeolites, which are found exclusively in the cavity of Deccan volcanic basalt.”

Talking about the scope and specialisation of geology, Dr Shrinivas Viladkar, geologist and senior faculty at the centre said, “The courses on geology opens vast streams of interest for people who have an inclination towards the subject. This exhibition will open more doors and career choices.”
