Mumbai to have integrated transport system by 2022-23

Mumbaikars can expect a seamless travel in the city as the Maharashtra government is hoping to link the ongoing transportation infrastructure projects in the next four to five years. The government said the integrated transportation system will be used by the commuters on one common ticket.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in his presentation on the second day of the Magnetic Maharashtra summit today said the world class infrastructure will be created in next four to five years in Greater Mumbai. ''Housing and mobility are two major issues for the city. There is a potential to construct 5 lakh homes in Greater Mumbai and another two lakh in Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). About 250 km of metro rail network is being developed in MMR. Metro rail corridors are expected to carry 11.1 million passengers. Besides, second phase of mono rail will be completed soon. The government will launch Roro services,'' he added.

Further, the government is implementing the elevated railway corridors between Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus and Panvel and Virar and Churchgate. The Centre has proposed allocation of Rs 40,000 crore for the same. Ths is expected to give push for the suburban railway services.

According to Fadnavis, the construction of 22 km Mumbai Trans Harbour Link project will begin in March and it will be completed by June 2022. ''The project will save time from Mumbai to Navi Mumbai, reduce operating cost of vehicles and there will be smooth traffic flow between Mumbai isladn and the proposed Navi Mumbai airport,'' he noted.

Meanwhile, NITI Ayog CEO Amitabh Kant argued that if India is going to be power house then Maharashtra will be nerve centre and it has to continue its onward march. ''India has jumped 42 ranks in the ease of doing business over the last two years and Maharashtra has played a stellar road in achieving this mile stone,'' he noted
