The city will have its first dedicated clinic for thrombosis, or blood clotting obstructing circulation, at Sir JJ Groups of Hospital. According to doctors at the facility, most thrombosis cases are known to occur due to prolonged confinement to bed after patients are hospitalised. The clinic will also help research on the disease.

As of today, no specific data is available in the country about the condition.

The clinic in Mumbai — one among three that will be set up across the state, the other two being in Pune and Nagpur — would also collect data for research purposes.

The centres will standardize diagnosis and treatment protocols by integrating global best practices into the domestic context.

According to the doctors, over the last decade, the number of patients treated for thrombosis has risen rapidly.

The objective of the centers is to spread awareness among patients and doctors about the condition and its life-threatening complications.

Dr Priya Patil, associate professor of medicine, Sir JJ Hospitals, will head the clinic. "There are different causes of occurrence of thrombosis. A majority of the cases are due to prolonged bedridden states after a surgery or during treatment at public hospitals. Some patients also come from private hospitals. But there is no specific centre dedicated to investigate and cure the medical problem."

Thrombosis is the formation of blood clots in the artery (arterial thrombosis) or vein (venous thrombosis). Once formed, a clot can slow or block normal blood flow and even break loose and travel to an organ.

Dr Savita Rangarajan, a haematologist who will mentor the clinicians, said, "The centres will also conduct clinical research and collect India-specific data. In the long-term, this can be combined with data from other haematology centres to create a nationwide registry."

TRIAD OF CENTRES
