Hunting for parking space in Mumbai will soon become easier as the city is set to get over 4,700 public parking slots.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) scheme providing additional Floor Space Index (FSI) in return of construction and handing over of public parking lots has generated over 4,700 parking slots.

Initially, the BMC had received as many as 65 proposals for multi-storey parking lots. However, most of the proposal dropped in approval stages because the government scrapped the policy abruptly.

According to the data collected by the BMC, Lodha Group had recently handed over 1,404 parking slots to BMC at Lower Parel, Powai and Andheri. Work for 204 parking slots at Altamount has also been completed and soon will be handed over to BMC by the Lodha Group.

Moreover, Runwal Developers, Wadhava, Matrix Marathon and Kanakia will soon hand over 1,269, 873, 440, and 174 numbers of parking slots respectively to the civic body. Also Rachana, Cloud Nine and M/s Vinita Estate are likely to hand over 116, 80 and 194 parking slots, respectively, to the corporation. The total build up area of this 4,700 parking slots is 2.61 lakh sqmt.

"The parking spaces have been illegally occupied by squatters and pavement dwellers. Local residents are using the space to dump garbage," said a developer requesting anonymity.

A senior government official said that the city needs nearly 40,000 public parking slots to resolve the parking issue. The government had earlier expected to generate 28,000 parking slots with successful approval and construction of initial 65 proposals.

"The abrupt cancellation of the parking policy left the developers in a confused state. The government should be firm on its decision. The dilly-dally affects our budget and planning," the developer added.
