The project to start making the city's heritage more "visible" for its people and tourists is likely to start from November. The tender for a pilot project will be out in a week or ten 10 days. The pilot project's first phase looks to work on the stretch from Regal Cinema to north-end of the Mumbai University before the entire stretch of MG Road is taken up.

"In a week or 10 days we will be out with the tender for the pilot project. It will look to make heritage more visible through minimum cost and simple interventions. Medians, signboards, street furniture, and bus stop will be standardised, footpaths re-engineered and arborists will be roped in to make to give proper shape to trees and and foilages," said Idzes Kundan, additional municipal commissioner.

As per the proposed plan (see images below for the look), special emphasis is being given to make footpaths and medians more disabled, visually impaired and pram friendly. This will be done by having tactile paving on medians to help the visually impaired through stick movement, concrete in-situ paving for footpaths, kerb drop ramps to help wheelchairs and prams.

The project cost is estimated to be Rs 5 crores. The work once started, is likely to be given for maintenance for three years said another official. "We are looking to have a more permanent look to this. If there is a digging, that will have to be corrected as per heritage plan," said an officer.

Among the other things that are planned for uniformity are concrete benches, tree grates, and minimalist bus stops that are least hindrance to sight. "Since this is a pilot project, we will first focus at the interventions before looking at the hawkers," said Kundan.
