A mob allegedly vandalised police vehicles and attacked policemen and security personnel of a state-run agency, on Saturday night, following the death of a 17-year-old Dharavi boy at Sion Hospital.

Two constables and three Maharashtra State Security Corporation (MSSC) personnel including a woman were injured while four vehicles were damanged, police said.

Sachin Jaiswar, a Class IX student residing in Jai Bhawani Chawl, Rajiv Gandhi Nagar, died at the civic-run hospital, while undergoing treatment on Saturday, the police said. Two days before being admitted to the hospital, he was questioned by the Dharavi police and his family has alleged he was tortured. "In the wee hours of July 12, some Dharavi policemen had picked up Sachin over a criminal case," said Jaiswar's brother Sunil.

He was released 22 hours later. Back at home, Sachin fell sick and was admitted to hospital, where he died during treatment. We suspect that Sachin was brutally tortured by the police while in custody, which led to his death on Saturday," said Jaiswar's brother Sunil.

Around 11.30 pm, around 100 people gathered outside the hospital and started pelting stones at the policemen, their vehicles and MSSC personnel. The protesters also tried to barge into the hospital but were stopped. The mob allegedly beat up the on-duty policemen and MSSC personnel, who are generally deployed at the state government offices and organisations. A traffic police outpost, located near the hospital, was also allegedly vandalised by the mob, police said.

Police officials rushed to the spot to pacify the crowd and told them that Jaiswar had died of suspected leptospirosis, a water-borne disease. The police have sent the body for postmortem to JJ Hospital, the official said.

Meanwhile, police are scanning CCTV footage to identify the rioters, against whom an offence has been registered under Indian Penal Code sections pertaining to rioting, unlawful assembly, and assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging duty, the official said.

Dr Jayshree Mondkar, dean of Sion Hospital, said, "After the incident, around 13 policemen and security guards were admitted to the hospital with minor injuries. One suffered a finger fracture. Their condition is stable now. They are likely to get discharged by Monday." Constable Kishorekumar Kadam, 31, sustained head injuries.

On-duty medical officer at Sion Hospital, said, "It was a case of leptospirosis. The patient had a clinical history of fever and was taking treatment for a few days at the hospital. While the minor boy succumbed due to his illness, relatives and family members had a fight with the police officers and security guards."
