Thousands of commuters in Mumbai were affected along the Western Railway (WR) line, after an Over-Head-Wire (OWH) snapped in the early morning hours between Kandivali and Borivali stations.

The cable broke at around 7:30 am, jamming services of both up and down locals along the slow-track line on Western Railway. For almost an hour, the service along the line came to a standstill, taking a toll on hundreds of commuters stuck at Borivali, Kandivali, Malad and Goregaon stations.

A team of technicians resolved the issue at around 9:45 am, after which service was resumed with a delay of around 20 minutes. "There was no announcement at all. Totally irresponsible and pathetic display by WR authorities," said Danesh Jamkar an irked passenger from Malad.

The incident not only affected the work schedule of hundreds of office-goers, but also of students appearing for several exams across Mumbai. "I was forced to travel by autorickshaw as the trains were late. My exams were scheduled for 9 am at my college in Vile Parle, I ended up spending Rs 327 on the ride just so that I reached in time," said BMM student Nidhi Modi from Kandivali.

Owing to the delay, commuters crowded across all the stations between Borivali and Goregaon, with many even jumping to board express mail trains going towards Mumbai Central station. A man was severely injured, when he tried to do so at Borivali station. According to GRP official, a man in his 40s tried to jump aboard a running mail-shuttle headed for Bandra terminus. "He caught the railing at the door, but failed to get a grip on the footboard of the running train. He was pulled out by other commuters, however, not before fracturing his ankle and right-leg," he added. The CCTV grab from the station shows how the man was rescued by fellow commuters from been pulled into the gap and under the wheels of the train.
