The BMC's health department has issued a circular, asking all school teachers and principals to attend a workshop on vaccination for school-going children to eradicate measles rubella. The campaign is aimed at eradicating the disease by 2020, the circular says.

The circular was issued despite a 13-year-old girl from Shivaji Nagar, Govandi, dying after being administered iron supplements in the school. The Mumbai School Principals Association held a meeting on Saturday to discuss whether to continue with the practice of giving iron supplements in state-run schools, as part of the National Iron Plus Initiative across country.

BMC's health department has written to the Deputy Director of School Education to hold a workshop for all principals and teachers of government and privately-aided and unaided schools on vaccination to eradicate measles rebulla from the country. However, the recent Govandi incident has put many schools in a tight spot. The training for principals and teachers began from August 10 and will be conducted zone-wise.

Prashant Redij, general secretary, Mumbai School Principal's Association, said: "We held a meeting recently of all the association principals to discuss about the recent Govandi incident and came to know about the new circular. Association principals have not administered iron medicines to our students after the Govandi incident. If the government wants to provide vaccination to our students, then the health officer from BMC should be present at the time of giving the same."

BMC education officer said, "The vaccination programme is for students from class 5 to 10. The teachers and principals will be given training on how to update the system and keep a tab on who and how many children are covered under this campaign, and how many are left behind, along with what to do at the time of vaccination."

Dilshad Thobani, one of the school principals and Brihanmumbai Headmasters Association, Vice President, said" "Already, there are many responsibilities and this will be an added one. When are we supposed to teach to complete the syllabus."

In the campaign, one teacher will register students for vaccination, in other room injection will be provided and in a third room, students will have to sit for half and hour.
