Around 350 teachers of unaided schools from across Maharashtra state on Friday held demonstrations that involved them begging on the streets of Mumbai city. The Maharashtra Permanent Unaided Schools Association is protesting against the state government for its decision not to provide aid to unaided schools that were approved for aid after evaluation.

Prashant Redij, Mumbai president of the association, said, "The teachers from across the state have been protesting for the past four days. Today, we teachers decided to protest by begging on the streets in front of Mantralaya, CST and Churchgate station. We want the government to consider giving aid to schools which are at present unaided. Most of the teachers, in a form of protest, shaved their heads on Thursday. We have collected Rs268 in alms and will contribute it in the Chief Minister's relief fund."

There are around 4,500 unaided schools in the state. Of these, only 1,829 unaided schools were evaluated in 2012-13 by the state government and declared eligible for government aid. According to the association, the government has not just forgotten to sanction the aid to the 1,829 evaluated schools, but has also not considered other unaided schools for evaluation, which is the association's demand. There are around 52 unaided schools in Mumbai.

Yadav Shelke, a teacher with Rupastri Vidyalaya at Ghansoli, Navi Mumbai, said, "In Mumbai, Raigad and Navi Mumbai regions, there are 200-250 unaided schools, which are eligible for aid and are waiting for it. If we get aid, we teachers will get a proper salary. At present, we have to work at low wages. To protest against the government's not sanctioning aid for our schools, I also participated in the protest and shaved my head yesterday."
