Under the pretext of being a powerful black magician, a 45-year-old man allegedly duped many people and local residents of Khar by falsely assuring them of cure to their illnesses and depression. The accused identified as Sumankant Somnath Kaul who is said to be a resident of Khar has been alleged to have looted victims who came to him to seek cure for health-related issues. Kaul was arrested by the Khar police on Saturday, after a victim lodged a complaint against him alleging that he was duped of Rs 53,000.

According to the Khar police, Kaul had been running the business since few years and he introduced himself to other clients as a powerful black magician capable of curing all types of diseases and illness which people face. Kaul who ran his office from a rented shop in Khar had earlier approached a newspaper and had given an advertisement portraying him to be a miraculous sage and curer of all health problems so that the ad gets more eyeballs and more victims could approach him for getting their medical problems solved.

"Things worked exactly how the accused wanted them to work. After the ad got published, more number of people approached him and revealed their problems to him. It is a very common phenomena for the people these days to face health problems like high blood pressure, anxiety and depression. People are tensed because of this and want to get rid of the same with immediate effect. The accused used to call them at his office and would say to his clients that he would hypnotise them and that moment will bring some healing effect for them. Saying so, he kept on practising the same method and for the same, he used to charge a hefty fees from the victim among which were high profile and well to do people. The complainant who had also gone for the cure was duped of total Rs 53,000 but nothing positive came out of it after which he lodged a police complaint. We suspect that more number of people might have been looted via hypnotism." said a police officer.

After registering a complaint, Kaul was booked under section 3 of the Anti-Superstition and Black Magic Act and section 420 of the Indian Penal Code. Kaul had been sent to cop custody till Wednesday and relative investigation of the case is under progress.
