A 33-year-old Customs Appraiser, Rishi Ranjan, allegedly committed suicide on Saturday morning by jumping in front of a Harbour Line train near the Khandeshwar railway station. Ranjan, posted at Jawarharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), was suspended from service in July after the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) named him in a case of smuggling of imported cigarettes.

According to the Government Railway Police (GRP) in Panvel, Ranjan's body was found around 6.30am on August 15, on the tracks near the Khandeshwar station. The body bore marks of severe injuries. Prima facie, the Panvel GRP registered a case of suicide.

Later, investigators found a suicide note left behind by Ranjan at his Navi Mumbai residence. "The post-mortem was conducted in a municipal hospital and the body was handed over to the family," said a GRP officer. He added, "A suicide note, left behind by Ranjan, has been found but we can't share the content at present."

Rajan, who recently got married, had been alone at the house, as his mother and wife had gone to Gujarat to visit their relatives. On July 29, the DRI officials had busted a smuggling racket, and seized a container of imported cigarettes worth Rs4.24 crore. Three people were arrested in the case, and Ranjan, who was the officer on duty at the container freight station (CFS) at the time, was suspended.

When contacted, DRI Additional Director General P K Dash said, "We were investigating the case of smuggling of imported cigarettes. He was suspended after we busted the racket. We were investigating his role in the case, but it is indeed a sad news that he committed suicide."
