Mumbai: Students develop compost kits for a 'waste-free' Vinayaka fete

Students of Mount Litera International School here have undertaken an initiative to celebrate a "waste-free Ganesh Chaturthi". The students aim to educate the community are visiting residential complexes after school hours to explain the functioning of kits, techniques to form fertilisers and encourage them to use the composts..

The students examined the past data portals to found out that 900 metric tonnes to 2000 metric tonnes of garbage is generated as a result of Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations in Mumbai. The students created DIY composing kits that help to convert all degradable waste to fertilizers which is cost-effective. The kits are designed in a way that doesn't need more than 2x2 ft space.

Sharing her thoughts on the initiative, Ms Mona Seervai, Head of school – Mount Litera School International said, "Mount Litera School International follows the IB curriculum that focuses on enquiry-based learning. Our idea was to allow the children to conduct own research and understand issues that mar the society. From an academic standpoint, our students had to undertake basic research, understand the science behind composting and then apply their understanding for the betterment of the community."
