A couple — both senior citizens — was murdered at their Khar residence on Thursday. Police are on the lookout for their 25-year-old caretaker, who has been missing since the murder came to light. The incident once again brings to fore the need to seek credentials of house-helps and providing the same to the police. Police sources said they have got leads about the suspect and would nab her soon.

According to police, Nanak Gopaldas Makhijani, 85, and Daya Nanak Makhijani, 80, who resided on the first floor of Ekta Elite building in 21st Road in Khar (W). They had a maid, a cook, a driver, and a full-time caretaker working for them. The couple stayed in a sprawling 2,000-square ft, three-bedroom flat. Around 8 am when one of the house-helps kept ringing the bell to no avail, she informed the neighbours and watchman, police said.

"The watchman then peeped through the bedroom window and saw the bodies," said a Khar police officer.

He then informed the police, who rushed to the spot and sent the bodies for autopsy.

"We found the house ransacked. We are not certain about what exactly has been stolen. The other Makhijani employees said that the couple was in need of a full-time caretaker and had informed the watchman about the same. Thus, when a woman approached him seeking employment as a domestic help, he sent her to the couple. The woman, who hails from Jharkhand, started working as a full-time caretaker for the couple a fortnight ago," said the officer.

A person close to the family claimed that the woman had given her Aadhaar card to the Makhijani's, but had taken it away before fleeing with cash and jewellery.

"I have known the family for years. I was shocked to learn about the murder. As an office bearer at Khar Gymkhana, I would see them almost daily. They visited the gymkhana quite often," said Vivek Devnani, who is known to the family.
Dinesh Makhijani, nephew of the deceased, said: "Aunty had called me just two weeks ago. She inquired about a full-time servant. I was informed about the incident by the watchman. It is surprising that the building did not even have a CCTV camera. His sons, Sandeep (45) and Rajkumar (53) will be here soon."

Khar police have registered a case under sections 302 (murder), 394 (Voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery), 397 (Robbery, or dacoity, with attempt to cause death or grievous hurt), 452 (house trespassing), 459 (Grievous hurt caused whilst committing lurking house-trespass or house-breaking), 460 (house break-in), 381 (theft by servant), and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.
