Two men, a biker and an autorickshaw driver, died on the spot when a speeding Honda Accord crashed into six vehicles including a BMW and two bikes on Linking Road in Bandra (West). The incident occurred around 9.05 am right across the Amarsons showroom on Linking Road. Two people sustained injuries in the accident.

The driver of the Accord, Mobin Barmare, was arrested by the Khar police and charged under Sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 279 (rash and negligent driving) and 427 (driving in wrong direction) of the Indian Penal Code. Parmar, 37, was reportedly in a rush to reach Worli and sped through a one-way lane in the wrong direction and then got on to Linking Road on the the wrong side of the carriageway.

An eyewitness who is also the complainant in the case told Khar police that the silver-coloured Honda Accord came down the Pali Hill Roadat top speed. Parmar was driving in the wrong direction on the one-way stretch, approximately 100 metres road till it opens out on Linking Road. On reaching Linking Road opposite Amarsons store, Barmare, still headed in the wrong direction on the north-bound carriageway, first rammed his car into an autorickshaw, that was left completely mangled by the impact.

Apparently unable to control the car, Barmare then crashed into three parked vehicles including a Maruti Swift, a BMW and a Mahindra XUV, before ramming into a bike. The bike rider, Mahesh Ajwani,  was flung a few metres away. His head hit the road upon impact, resulting in severe injuries to the head and other parts of the body.

Autorickshaw driver Chandrakant Namdev Tupe, 45, also sustained severe injuries. Both were rushed to Bhabha Hospital where they were declared dead before admission.

The passenger in the autorickshaw, Mandakini More, is recuperating in the ICU at Bhabha Hospital while Rehana Sedat, owner of the Honda Accord, sustained minor injuries and was admitted to Lilavati Hospital in  Bandra.

While Sedat, 39, an Australian national working for a private company in Mumbai, reportedly went to Lilavati Hospital on her own, Barmare was nabbed by passersby and handed over to the police.

“Many vehicle owners drive in the wrong direction in order to use the no-entry road as a shortcut. That's why the accident took place. It happens often that vehicle owners flout traffic rules. Bandra has become accident-prone just because of flouting of the traffic norms,” said one of Ajwani’s neighbours.
