This story seems to be straight out of some Bollywood script.

Two months ago, a 48-year-old man succumbed to his assault injuries in a hospital. His family told the police that he had been assaulted by few unknown people hours before his death. However, after two months of investigation, the police found out that the man had been beaten by his eldest son as the deceased was an alcoholic and used to assault his mother mercilessly when drunk. The deceased's family had concocted the story to protect the son.

Crime branch sources said that two months ago, Bhikaji Salve, a tourist vehicle driver and resident of Chandivli in Saki Naka, had succumbed to his injuries in Rajawadi hospital. "Salve was so severely injured that he even couldn't give any statement before his death. His wife and children had told the police that he had come home in an injured condition and had said that on his way home he was accosted by a group of four men who tried to rob him and, when they couldn't find any money on him, attacked him brutally," said a crime branch officer.

He added that the family said after coming home Salve complained of pain in stomach and was then hospitalised, where he succumbed later. A case of murder was registered with the Saki Naka police.

"We investigated the case thoroughly for two months, but there was nothing to suggest that Salve could have been murdered due to any rivalry. We also picked up local criminals but there was no lead. We then made inquiries with some neighbours who told us that Salve used to come home drunk and assault his wife and children brutally," said a crime branch source.

A team of inspectors Gopika Jahangirdar, Sanjay Joshi and Sachin Khanvilkar from unit X of crime branch interrogated Salve's family again and soon the truth came out. "Salve's son Raju, 24, told us that on the day of the incident when he came home from work, he saw his father assaulting his mother mercilessly. In a fit of rage, Raju started assaulting his father. They then hospitalised him and concocted a story," the officer said.

Raju's custody was handed over to the Saki Naka police on Saturday.
