Mumbai sees dip in fatal accidents

Road accidents have seen a dip from 71,995 in 2009 to 61,890 in 2013, according to the latest Economic Survey. While fatalities in these accidents have increased from 11,396 to 12,194 in the same period, Mumbai saw a drop in the figures from 620 in 2009 to 496 in 2013.

In comparison to the state, the city has witnessed lesser growth in terms of number of vehicles per lakh. The number of vehicles per lakh of population increased from 15,580 in 2011 to 20504 in 2014, while in Mumbai the number of vehicles per lakh population increased from 14,989 in 2011 to 16,279 in 2014.

The total number of vehicles on road in the state was 2.28 crore as on January 1. The total number of vehicles have shown an increase of 9.4 per cent when compared to 2013. Of the total vehicles in the state, about 23.4 lakh vehicles (10.2 per cent) were in Brihanmumbai.
