It seems the authorities have not learned anything from the portion of Gokhale bridge collapsing resulting in the death of one citizen. A skywalk located in Dahisar (west) was shut by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in April 2017 citing its dilapidated condition but it was observed that several homeless people were residing on it. Some anti-social elements also use staircase of the skywalk for consuming alcohol.
The BMC had in April 2017 shut the skywalk after citing that it was not fit for use considering it’s dilapidated state. However, on Sunday, a visit by this correspondent, revealed that several people were residing on the skywalk. A shopkeeper named Mohan Raut on LT Road where the skywalk is located, said, “People are residing up on the skywalk even after BMC blocked the entry and exit. Also, the staircases on the skywalk are being used by anti-social elements for consuming alcohol. There is police patrolling but it is not sufficient.”
But the BMC has claimed that it has requested the police to do regular patrolling and ensure nobody uses it, until repair work is carried out.
Sandhya Nandekar, Assitant Municipal Commissioner, R/North Ward, said, “The structural audit report of the skywalk has suggested major repair works for it to be fit for use, and tendering for the same is on. The skywalk will not be demolished but repaired.”
Meanwhile, Ashok Jadhav, Senior Police Inspector, MHB Police Station said, “We do have regular patrolling as there is some trouble of people residing there, and we are tackling all problems related via patrolling.”
Meanwhile, several bridges that are decades old have been shut in the past few days due to corrosion or their structure requiring major repair works. The Delisle bridge at Lower Parel is also going to be demolished after it was shut for citizens last week.
