The education department’s recent notification to all schools to increase the number of working days has invited flak not only from schools but also parents as their weekend may just get shorter.  According to the education department’s recent circular, the working days for class I to V will be 200 a year and for class VI to VIII 220 to abide by norms as prescribed by Right to Education Act, 2009.

Currently, schools work for an average 185 days annually and the only way to follow the new guideline would be to work on Saturdays. “The department must leave it to the schools on how to increase working hours. An extra working day means increased expenses and work load for teachers and students,” said Ramakant Pandey, vice-president, Mahamumbai Shikshan Sanstha Sanghatana (school managements’ association).

Parents too have raised concerns over the new rule. “With six working days, when will they pursue hobbies or sports?” said Mamta Bhogte, Mulund resident and mother of two.

“Kids need a two-day break to unwind. Working parents too want to spend time with their children,” said Sakina Rangwala, a resident of Byculla.

The School Bus Owners’ Association (SBOA) has also hinted at a hike in bus fares. “SBOA will increase bus fees if schools work for six days a week. We are charging for 12 months according to the current average number of working days which is 180,” said Anil Garg, president of SBOA, Mumbai.
