Civic authorities claim that 75 per cent of school children in Mumbai have been vaccinated under the measles and rubella (MR) vaccination campaign till date. However, a majority of the children from some BMC wards are yet to be vaccinated.

According to the BMC officials, schools in five wards -- Byculla, L ward – Kurla, M(East) ward – Mankhurd, Govandi, P (North) ward – Malad west, B ward – Sandhurst Road are not very supportive about the campaign.

Dr Santosh Revankar, joint executive health officer from BMC's public health department, said, "Since November more than 4,160 schools in the city has been covered. Our percentage of children covered is lacking behind due to few schools not being able to support the campaign. More than 19.10 lakh children across the city have been vaccinated so far."

"Earlier which schools refused to vaccinate the students under this campaign, we are now covering those schools. Regular meetings with different schools parents, principal and teachers, are organised in order to make them aware about the campaign and its healthy effect for the children," added another official.

Only some of the schools in the above five wards as well as H (east) and H (west) ward have started the vaccination programme, majority of the schools' are not supportive which is delaying the time-bound of the campaign.

While the MR vaccination campaign was started in Maharashtra in the month of November, the government has covered around 22 districts till date. Officials said that 90 per cent of the children between the age group of nine months old to 15 years of age have been vaccinated in the state of Maharashtra.

In Mumbai, besides public and private schools, the BMC has started approaching the small communities in the city. The civic body had estimated 29 lakh children in the nine month to 15 years of age for vaccination.

According to the health department, the aim of the vaccination campaign is to make Indian Children free from the dreadful effects of measles and rubella.
