With the stock available across lakes supplying water to city recorded at 14.05 lakh million litres on Thursday, the megapolis is in a safe position as far as annual water demand is concerned over the next 10 months, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has said.

The corporation, however, has appealed to residents to adopt water conservation practices to ensure there is sufficient water until July-end next year. Civic authorities feel that Mumbai is lucky to be in the present position after the dry spell at the beginning of monsoon this year triggered water crisis. Some spell of heavy rains in catchment areas from the last week of July to mid-August gave relief to Mumbaikars after having to face water cuts due to receding stock level. Last year on the same day, useful content available across the lakes was 13.72 lakh million litres.

"This current stock will help us decide daily supply to be made over the next 10 months. We will continue supplying 3,750 million litres per day," Ramesh Bambale, hydraulic engineer, said.

Bambale added that in order to inculcate water conservation habits among people, the corporation intends to launch a permanent awareness campaign.

"In fact, we have already issued advertisements in this regard. The BMC will also circulate posters to spread messages across societies in city in a month," Bambale said. He added that the corporation has already joined hands with the railways and its transport wing, BEST, for campaign activities.

"We are also seeking help from the trust managing Somaiya colleges. We will first sensitise 35,000 students attached to their institutes. These students will later pass on the message to societies through different means. We will also organise lectures for civic school students through virtual classroom sessions," the officer added.

The BMC will also use social networking sites to reach out to the public.
