According to experts and anti-noise pollution activists, this report will play a very crucial role as it will provide the state government with a platform to plan a roadmap to tackle noise pollution in a more scientific manner.
The exercise to map the noise levels across the 27 cities of Maharashtra which includes Mumbai is not only complete but will also provide the details of the actual noise levels felt on the streets by the common man.
The long withstanding report will be submitted to the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) this week by the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), a government research body which conducted the study.
According to experts and anti-noise pollution activists, this report will play a very crucial role as it will provide the state government with a platform to plan a roadmap to tackle noise pollution in a more scientific manner.
Officials from the NEERI said that apart from giving overall noise levels across residential, commercial and industrial areas, this will also be the first study to provide data on the actual noise levels of the streets.
"While noise mapping was done by setting up monitoring station, we did not want to miss out on the noise levels on several of the smaller and busy streets which are frequented by lakhs of people and motorists daily and hence we tied up with several NGO's and their members were asked to move on cycles and record the decibels on the streets across these 27 cities. This will help give the real feel of noise on the streets and would help in planning interventions to reduce noise levels," said Dr Rakesh Kumar, Director of NEERI.
Kumar added that NEERI had submitted the draft report, which was discussed with the MPCB and there were some recommendations and suggestions made by them. These are now being incorporated and a panel report will be submitted by May 12.
