The 11th edition of Corporate Indoor Games began in the city on Saturday. The sporting extravaganza is being held at Goregaon Sports Club and Smaaash over five days — June 21, 28 and 29, and July 5 and 6 — in badminton, bowling, chess, carrom, pool, squash and table tennis.

Started in 2004, the event has attained great heights over the years. In 2007, it got a mention in the Limca Book of Records for "maximum corporate participation in an event across seven different games and 26 event categories in three major cities", when it was conducted in Mumbai, Pune and Bangalore.

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in sports and fitness among corporate employees in India. With sports being considered a medium to stay fit, sporting events are seen as a great way to break the monotony of the mundane day-to-day lives.

CEO of SportzConsult Jitendra Joshi said, "The atmosphere at Corporate Indoor Games is always electric. Fatigue, monotony and boredom are some of the tearless sorrows for many employees. Participation in CIG breaks this routine and provides them joy, satisfaction and an uplifting exhilaration. For many participants, it provides the spark to continue playing and practising on a regular basis. This, we believe, is our small contribution towards making India a sporty, healthy and fit nation."

Rave Technologies and Kaspersky Lab are the associate sponsors for the event. Mickey Mehta's 360° Wellness Temple is the fitness partner and Cricket Today & Sports Plus is the magazine partner.
