The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), which is beautifying the Fort area, has begun working on the heritage precinct ranging from St Xavier's College, BMC headquarters, CSTM station to Mumbai University, including the CSTM station, Bombay High Court, etc.

And while the actual aim of the project is to beautify the footpaths, roads, trees and signboards, the actual aim is to provide a better view of the heritage structures, which would even result in more tourist footfalls.

A cluster of Victorian and art deco buildings in the Fort precinct and Marine Drive has been declared a UNESCO world heritage site. But many of these buildings are hidden behind a canopy of trees, and one is often unable to see them because of uneven footpaths. But if all goes according to plan, the footpaths will be even, while existing furniture like bus stops, lightpoles and benches without support would make way. There would also be a standard one-metre space around the trees' base. Even shops' billboards are meant to be the same uniform size.

The plan is currently limited to the heritage precinct. "We are doing it as a pilot project. We want to showcase the ideal precinct, so other parts of the city can take inspiration from it," said Sanjay Sawant, chief of the BMC's heritage cell.

The plan also includes trimming of tall and haphazard trees, while the civic body is also searching for a "tree surgeon" to fix them. The civic body said it would redecorate the landscape by creating uniform gardens outside all heritage precincts. A tender for this purpose has been floated, while work on a pilot project is likely to be completed within a year. The contractor who wins the contract would maintain it for three years. Redecoration of the precinct is likely to cost between Rs 10 crore and Rs 20 crore.
