The city's swanky and eco-friendly public toilet, which was built at Marine drive for a whooping amount of Rs 90 lakh was reopened for public on Monday after being shut for two days. The toilet was shut down owing to the strong stench it raised that inconvenienced commuters and locals.

This was the second time the toilet has been shut in three months. The toilet equipped with solar panel and vacuum technology to save water was hailed as a state of the art. However, that did not save the passers-by from its strong stench.

"Every morning I go to Marine Drive for a walk. Every passerby has to pinch his nose to escape the stench. There have to be some technical issues which the BMC has to resolve," said Meena Mutha, a resident of Marine Lines.

Meena Mutha is not the only Mumbaikar who is facing this issue. Mahendra Hemdev, another resident of Marine Lines said, "In January it was closed right after Marathon for three days owing to some septic tank issues. Now the officials are telling there is some water line issue. The officials must study and resolve the issues before building a toilet."

"The toilet was shut due to water pipeline issue which has been resolved," said Kiran Dighavkar, assistant municipal commissioner of A Ward. An officer from the A ward said that the water pipeline had broken and had to be fixed. "The toilet did not have a connection to the sewerage line which is on the opposite side of the road. It has a sewage tank and we clean it twice in a week. It is when the toilet stinks," added the officer added.

The toilet, which was inaugurated by the Shiv Sena youth wing leader, Aaditya Thackeray on October 2 last year, has been constructed under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative and was handed over to the BMC for maintenance. It costs the BMC up to Rs 1 lakh per month for maintenance, housekeeping services and sewage transport.
