The Bangur Nagar police recently arrested a chain-snatcher from Tamil Nadu who was identified by the police through his Facebook account. The chain-snatching victim had managed to get hold of the snatcher's mobile phone which helped the police get details of the suspect from his Facebook account.

The accused is identified as Shailendra Karpaswami Konar, 28, a native of Tamil Nadu.

According to the Additional Commissioner of Police, North Region, Rajesh Pradhan, the incident took place on June 27 when victim Jaspal Kishan Singh, 58, a television script writer by profession, was walking near the Oshiwara bus depot in Goregaon (W) when Konar approached Singh and attempted to snatch Singh's belongings. This ensued with a scuffle between Konar and Singh during which the former managed to snatch three gold chains and a gold locket totally worth Rs 7 lakh of Singh. However, Konar dropped his mobile phone during the scuffle.

"Singh brought the said mobile phone to the police station and lodged a complaint. A case of robbery was registered against Konar. We found a Facebook account of one Stelin Konar in the said phone and it turned out to be of the suspected thief. When we showed the profile photograph of Konar to Singh, the latter identified him as the snatcher," said Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone XI, Vikram Deshmane.

"The police later tracked Konar to his native place in Tamil Nadu and arrested him. We have recovered entire stolen property from Konar. He is a history-sheeter and has two cases registered against him in Goregaon and Bangur Nagar police stations," said Senior Police Inspector Santosh Bhandare of Bangur Nagar police station.
