The developments at Regional Transport Offices are not just about ousting touts from the premises! As things stand, from now on, even transport officials will not be able to demand any extra amount from you to get your work done.

On Thursday, the transport commissioner sent out yet another 'Red Inked' letter (Red Alert) to Regional Transport Offices across Maharashtra. It warns officials against asking the public to pay even a rupee more to get their work done. The required work should be done without any interruption or delay, it says.

"A letter has been issued which talks about the fees prescribed as per the law. I have only stated that the public should get their services well within the prescribed fees," confirmed Mahesh Zagade, transport commissioner, to dna. Zagade added: "Furthermore, we do not want any individual to be fleeced by having to pay even a rupee more to get his/her work done."

The letter (copy with dna), says that overcharging only promotes corruption and it also means "we are shirking away from our responsibilities prescribed by the law" (sic). It has also alerted officials that the subject matter in question would be regularly reviewed across RTOs in the state.

On January 12, the transport commissioner had sent a similar 'Red Inked' letter to all RTOs in the state, asking them tersely to root out agents from RTO premises. That letter reads: "I had expected that you would accomplish it immediately as this isn't a very difficult task as these agents can't sustain and flourish without the active and passive connivance of the local staff and it could be easily achieved if that connivance is terminated forthwith. This is within the domain of your administrative responsibilities." (sic).

And as a result, starting from January 20, RTOs banned entry of touts. Only those individuals who have their own work related to the transport department are now allowed into the premises. Ever since agents have been holding protests against the move. However, for the common man it has become a lot easier to get their work done in the least possible time due to non-interference of agents in the day-to-day functioning of RTOs.
