Mumbai has had the dubious distinction of being an accident-prone city. However, if the latest data of the Mumbai traffic police is anything to go by, the number of accident cases in the city has considerably reduced this year as compared to last year. The Mumbai traffic police attributes this to a number of measures introduced by them this year.

Accident stats Mumbai
Fatal

Jan to Aug 2013 - 387
Jan to Aug 2014 - 350
Reduced by 37
Non fatal
Jan to Aug 2013 - 15244
Jan to Aug 2014 - 14684
Reduced by 560

TWO major factors behind accidents:
1. Rash and negligent driving
2. Potholes and uneven road conditions

Measures undertaken

Officials visited about 50 busy spots including spots on Eastern Express highway, Western express highway, SCLR and studied the traffic dynamics.

Put up speed breakers in atleast 8 spots in the city, signages, rumblers and road reflectors

Intensive check on drunken driving, keeping a tab on bike racers and goods transporters, tanker owners, etc

Educate rash drivers and motorists everytime they violate a law

Shifted the traffic islands wherever necessary, as per the traffic flow and also sought help in changing the road engineering

To ease pedestrian crossing, repainted pedestrian crossing areas

Suggested increasing width of the footpath wherever required

A whatsapp group where any emergency or traffic congestion is notified so that somebody is deployed immediately to the affected area

Within the department:
The department has also focussed on regulation rather than enforcement. "Apart from awareness drives, we are also internally challenging our officials and motivating them," said Upadhyay. He said that the department holds a programme called Susamvad where senior traffic officials, including joint commissioner, interact with 50 to 60 constables and officers from traffic chowkies every week and try to understand the problems they face on the field. Apart from that, the department also rewards 25 traffic officials every month through an initiative called "Traffic Cop of the Month".
