The MHB colony police have arrested three former employees of a Delhi-based BPO for allegedly cheating a Borivli resident to the tune of Rs34 lakh by posing as insurance company professionals of a popular private company.

According to the police, the accused, Ankit Sachdev (24), Rohit Singh (24) and Raju Pandit (23) are believed to be part of a bigger racket. The police have also arrested a fourth accused who was an account holder. The three main accused allegedly stole customer data from the company they had worked for and have been targeting people whose insurance policies have matured or about to mature. While two of the accused were arrested from Delhi, two other accused were arrested from Nagpur and a dozen phones were confiscated from them.

The MHB Colony police registered a case after a businessman from Borivali West fell prey to the fraud recently. API Nitin Londhe of the MHB Colony police said, "The trio collected the data of the victim. They posed as insurance company employees and called him claiming that his policy is about to mature. After earning his trust, they started doling out offers. They offered to extend his existing policy which they said will give him higher returns in a few years and declared bonus at regular intervals." They also emailed him forged letters from the bank and the company that gave details of the policy and the extended offer. The victim has been depositing money at regular intervals into the accounts of the trio over the last one year.

"However, when he failed to receive any bonus as promised and contacted the concerned agencies to get an update, he realised that he was being cheated. He immediately approached the MHB Colony police. We traced the numbers to Delhi and arrested two of them, after which we traced the other two to Nagpur," said Londhe. The three main accused have cases registered against them in Nagpur and are believed to have cheated several people in the past. The accused were arrested on charges of forgery, cheating of IPC and under relevant sections of the IT act.
