The Bombay Durga Bari Samiti (BDBS), which is considered to be the oldest Durga Puja festival in the city is set to give a 'Mela' feel to its 89th year of celebration. To be held at Tejpal Hall, the festival looks to transport devotees back to the old days.

"In Sanskrit, 'mela' means a gathering of people. We wanted to transport people back to the bygone days. Hence, we have chosen mela theme to take back people to their childhood days. We will be wearing traditional clothes and hand-woven sarees. Since youngsters are moving away from tradition, we are trying to remind them of their roots and tradition. For that we are organising different programs," said Priyanka Basu, in-charge of the public relation for Bombay Durga Bari Samiti.

These include Ritu Ranga, performed by a group of non-Bengalis, that looks to transcend language barriers to celebrate each season through Rabindranath Tagore's eternal poetry. Apart from that, stand up comedy by Anuvab Pal, musical programs by Rupankar and Goonj, a sitar fusion band, a dance medley by Banhisikha Dance Troupe from Kolkata will be staged. Dhunuchi Naach, a dance performed with 'dhunuchis' (burning clay lamps) in front of Goddess Durga, will be the highlight of the celebration.

"Like all environmentally conscious individuals and associations, our protima (idol) will once again be eco-friendly, painted with water-soluble colours. The pandal too will not have any plastic, thermocol or varnish decorations. A number of charitable activities will also be taken up as part of the festival," said Jayanta Basu, president of the Bombay Durga Bari Samiti.
