Even as rains continued to lash the city on Monday, it marked the best recorded overall Air Quality Index (AQI) since air quality monitoring began in June 2015 for the city at 13.

As per System of Air Quality Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR), in the last 25 days, June, has already seen five best AQI records — the latest being on June 19, when the AQI was 18. Other best AQI recorded were on June 4 (AQI: 34), June 8 (AQI: 32) and June 20 (AQI 22).

"The reason is that it has been raining non-stop, with faster winds not allowing any emission to accumulate and convert it to pollution. Even if the rain stops for a day in between, AQI will touch 50," informed Gufran Beig, Project Director, SAFAR.

Meanwhile, as per the portal of SAFAR, which monitors Air Quality Index (AQI), at 10 stations in Mumbai, the PM10 was 12 µg/m3 (safe limit for 24 hours is 60µg/m3), while the PM2.5 was 8 µg/m3 (safe limit for 24 hours is 40µg/m3).

Mumbai Rains

As per IMD officials, rains are likely to continue on Tuesday and Wednesday, but the intensity might be less.

Meanwhile, from 8.30am to 8 30pm, Santacruz recorded 48.3 mm of rainfall, while Colaba recorded 43mm, which is not only the highest this season, but also the highest for the month of June in the past two years. "The city will see more rains over the next couple of days, but we expect its intensity to be slightly less," said an IMD official.

Akshay Deoras, an independent meteorologist, explained that the trough (elongated low pressure) along the west coast of India is the primary weather system that brings monsoon rainfall in Mumbai. "It has now strengthened and located in a proper position from south Gujarat coast to Kerala, resulting in an increase in moisture and rainfall. Good rains will continue through the week, in Mumbai and the surrounding areas," he said

Meanwhile, Vagaries of Weather, a group run weather enthusiasts, stated that Mumbai has already achieved its monthly rainfall average for June, that too within 24 days. "From June 1 to June 25 morning, Santacruz observatory has recorded 686.9mm, while Colaba has recorded 694.3mm," said Rajesh Kapadia, who runs the blog.
