Even after four days, the police have not been able to apprehend the rape accused of the 5-year-old girl in Kandivli.

According to the police, their investigation has been hampered by the girl's mother as she is constantly changing her statements about the attacker's identity.

Mahipati Pandharmise, senior inspector of Kandivli police station, said, "We have prepared a sketch of the accused based on a description provided by the survivor's mother. We brought in several people from the survivor's neighbourhood for questioning but we have not been able to pinpoint the accused yet."

Pandharmise added that the girl's mother was unsure when she was taken for an identification parade in the area and has been changing her statements. "We are yet to take the girl's statement as she is still in the hospital," said Balsingh Rajput, DCP, Zone II.

The child, who lived on a footpath with her mother and brother at Saibaba Nagar, was abducted around 3am on Wednesday. The police suspect her attacker was someone who resided in the neighbourhood.

The girl was raped in the most brutal manner by her attacker who shoved a broom up her vagina. According to doctors, the broom was inserted one foot deep into the girl's private parts.

Her vagina and rectum were mutilated and she had lost a lot of blood. The infected parts were cleaned and a colostomy was performed. An incision was also made in her abdomen to facilitate the passing of stool and urine, said the doctors. She is out of danger.
